Water Therapy training (also known as hydrotherapy) educates professional health care workers in the many uses of water for the purposes of natural healing. Water Therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with other physical therapy treatments to relieve back pain, increase the range of motion in the spine and joints, and strengthen muscles. Water Therapy is used by physical therapists, massage therapists, and naturopaths to help reduce stress, pain, discomfort, and muscle spasms during physical therapy.

Water Therapy relies on the buoyancy of water to counteract gravity. This helps to gently support the patient's weight and to limit friction, which reduces the risk of further injury during treatments. Students learn to regulate the temperature of the water and the hydrostatic pressure to relax the patient and relieve pain. Water Therapy is especially beneficial for sports injuries, work-related injuries, joint pain and arthritis.

Water Therapy instruction includes many types of aquatic treatments, such as swimming and other water-based exercises, saunas, steambaths, soaking in a tub or whirlpool, icing sprains, applying hot or cold compresses, douches, enemas, colonic hydrotherapy, and more.

To practice water therapy, you must be a qualified health professional. Water Therapy is part of the degree curriculum for physical therapists, massage therapists, and naturopathic physicians, and it can also be studied by health professionals as a continuing education course.
